The Informatics department develops, supports and enables the application of informatics across Merck, in partnership with quantitative and knowledge management organizations throughout the company. Our world-class team is currently seeking outstanding informatics professionals to join our global team supporting advanced search, data mining, analytics and knowledge management capabilities.
The Informatics Program Lead will be responsible for developing and executing informatics programs utilizing unstructured and structured data, information and knowledge to enable Merck Research Labs drug discovery, development and commercialization objectives. This position will play a leadership role for Merck, representing Informatics in Merck's relationships with key partners; collaborating with Merck Knowledge Management / Knowledge Discovery, Global Security and other internal partners in realizing a coherent strategy for applying innovative search, data mining and knowledge management capabilities.
The Program lead will manage virtual teams spanning multiple sites and functional areas to implement innovative informatics programs, effectively defining and communicating objectives, processes, milestones, budgets and deliverables. This leader will also contribute to the strategic objectives of informatics broadly at Merck, and will recommend, evaluate and manage new informatics opportunities, initiatives, and partnerships, working with Merck innovation teams to support informatics components of adjacency opportunities.
Specific responsibilities for this role include:
* Developing and managing a portfolio of programs to enable informatics capabilities for advanced search, knowledge management and semantic technologies.
* Lead and/or coordinate formulation of enterprise-wide advanced search and data mining platforms.
* Create innovative tools and systems, e.g. data mining, web-scraping, semantic web, high performance computing, visualization etc. in coordination with internal and external software engineering teams that have company-wide impact.
Qualifications
Education:
* Minimum of MS degree in biostatistics, computer science, information technology or other relevant field.
Required:
* A minimum of ten years of relevant work experience in bioinformatics, information technology and/or drug discovery in an academic or industry environment.
* Significant experience with advanced search technologies
* Demonstrated history as a self-motivating, productive, innovative, interdisciplinary leader in information technology, advanced search and knowledge engineering.
* Capability to quickly grasp new technological concepts and convey their business value.
* Highly collaborative, with a strong track record of building communities and teams; demonstrated productivity in complex organizations.
* Demonstrated ability to listen to customers' needs, develop practical informatics solutions combining off the shelf and customized components to meet their requirements, trust and respect.
* Outstanding written and verbal communication and presentation skills; excellent team-building and interpersonal/management capabilities; effective planning and organizational abilities.
Preferred:
* Exposure to the best practices of industry leaders in information technology, knowledge management and advanced search are desired.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate with external vendors and partner companies to develop innovative informatics and analytics solutions to meet emerging industry needs.
* Experience communicating at the senior executive (VP) level, skills in negotiation and relationship skills along with high personal integrity, credibility, and energy.
