Reporting to Manager, Associate Director, or Director of Global Scientific Programming, the incumbent supports the coordination of activities and resources required for definition, development, execution and delivery of all analysis and reporting and submission deliverables for drug and/or vaccine projects.

* Accountable for leveraging the use of standards to maximize efficiency and consistency within and across assigned projects.
* Adheres to standard operating procedures established by the department.
* Drives data structures (data collection decisions, data cleaning requirements, data derivations, and submission standards) and actively contributes to the department's strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

* Bachelors (Masters preferred) in Computer Science, Statistics, Life Sciences or related field with at least 7 years of experience or Ph.D. with at least 5 years of experience

Required:

* Strong SAS programming (at least 5 years) and experience with efficacy/safety reporting
* Thorough knowledge of programming techniques in SAS and familiarity with at least one other statistical computing software (e.g. S+)
* Knowledge and understanding of CDISC SDTM and ADaM standards
* Basic knowledge of descriptive statistics and statistical methods
* Demonstrated understanding of statistics, clinical trial, and data management concepts as applied to drug/vaccine development
* Demonstrated experience with analysis and reporting deliverables, including analysis datasets, statistical analysis, tables and graphical displays
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively

Preferred:

* Experience in directing and coordinating the program development of other programmers, project leader
* Contributes to the development of departmental standards

This position is for a Statistician who will contribute to efforts to revolutionize the use of advanced technologies such as genetics, genomics, and siRNA in the discovery of novel biomarkers in clinical trials. This scientific position will require the development of novel statistical methods, as well as the application of these and existing methods to answer questions in clinical drug development. Resulting discoveries will lead to the development of new and/or existing pharmaceutical products. Primary activities include providing statistical support in terms of study design and analysis of the clinical data and biomarkers (including genetic or molecular profiling endpoints) in human trials. Position will collaborate extensively with subject-area experts, clinical and preclinical statisticians, and other appropriate groups in developing new statistical methodology and participation in the direction of research, especially in complex trait genetics. An important element of this position is the timely publication of research and development findings, and maintaining appropriate external contacts (e.g., industry groups, regulatory agencies, academic and research organizations) which further the objectives and reputation of Merck in the area of biomarker discovery (including statistical genetics and expression of genes).

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

* Candidates should have a PhD in Statistics or Bioinformatics or MS with significant clinical pharmacogenomic experience (at least 5 years).

Required:

* A specialization and relevant job experience in statistical genetics/genomics and knowledge about genotyping and microarray data is a must.
* Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
* Must be articulate in oral and written presentations to internal scientific and managerial review meetings and to regulatory agencies.
* Must have working knowledge in the use of SAS and R/Splus.
* Creative thinking, the development of original concepts, advanced knowledge of both statistics and genetics, and unusual resourcefulness are essential for performance in this position.

Preferred:

* Ideally, the candidate will also have a background in molecular profiling in a clinical trial setting; a background in life sciences is also acceptable.
* Understanding of relational databases would be an advantage.
* Ability to utilize and interpret bioinformatics tools would be an extra bonus.

Under the guidance of the Global Health Outcomes (GHO) Medical Data Analytics Lead and in close collaboration with the respective GHO outcomes research manager, the incumbent has the primary responsibility to support the Global Health Outcomes group's research activities for in-line and developmental compounds by providing statistical, methodological and data management expertise. This includes the design and execution of a wide range of retrospective database studies, prospective naturalistic pharmaco-economics studies and comparative effectiveness studies. This position will provide support in formulating strategic information and advice on cost/value, reimbursement, and promotion in support of marketed and developmental compounds.

In full collaboration with a GHO Outcomes Research manager, primary activities include, but are not limited to:

* Leverages analytical expertise and knowledge/access to databases to support strategic activities
* Reviews and provides critical appraisals of studies conducted by other sponsors.
* In coordination with OR managers, supports design and implementation of observational studies, evaluates data sources, and prepares data driven analyses reports to support the effort of understanding barriers and drivers to pricing, reimbursement, and market access
* Ensures analyses are implemented in a timely manner, utilizes rigorous statistical methods, and ensures that high quality data are available to support stated business needs
* Partners effectively with product managers and takes an active part in the development of study protocols, measurements, data collection forms, data analysis plans, final reports, and presentations/publications
* Collaborates with scientific/policy/clinical leaders to support Merck Outcomes Research
* Presents complex information, such as data driven analyses and reports, methods, and other results based on outcomes/market evaluations, to a wide variety of internal and external audiences
* Is responsible for keeping abreast of scientific developments within his/her fields of expertise, and maintain the OR group's awareness of new methodologies.

Qualifications

Education:

* A minimum of a Masters or PhD degree in biostatistics, statistics, public health, epidemiology, economics or a related field required.

Required:

* Minimum 3 years of experience with a statistical programming language required, preferably SAS.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills
* Ability to work independently.
* 10% Domestic/International travel required.
