The Early Discovery group seeks an outstanding Principal Scientist to join our Oncology Discovery team at our Research Lab in Boston.  You will lead a team of 2 to 4 direct reports that supports early and late development programs within our oncology pipeline.   You will have broad expertise in basic cancer biology, have expertise in drug discovery and have the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously. 

 

In this exciting role, you will also interact with internal translational/clinical stakeholders and external academic investigators, which includes, but is not limited to, organizing, assigning and overseeing key discovery and preclinical. 

Qualifications

Education Requirement: 

  • A minimum of a PhD

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • A minimum of 8 years experience in Oncology, in addition to post-doc experience in either academic, institutional or industrial setting.

  • Clear evidence of productivity during their post-doctoral fellowship, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications in top-tier journals and/or by demonstrable achievement

  • Expertise in Oncology Discovery. 
  • Expertise with basic cancer Biology.
  • Experience in murine tumor models (genetically engineered or syngeneic).
  • Ability to organize and communicate complex data sets in a clear and concise manner to key stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be a strong team player with excellent oral and written communication skills and with a demonstrated ability to work independently to design experiments, interpret data, troubleshoot, and suggest next steps.
  • Prior Management experience.

 

 

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Direct industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Tumor Intrinsic Biology and/or DNA damage/repair.
  • Background in project management and laboratory management is preferred.
  • Ability to actively contribute scientifically to immunological drug discovery research programs, including identification and validation of novel targets. 
  • Sufficient experience in drug discovery and/or late development. 
  • Ability to represent development teams and communicate goals/deliverables to senior management and/or governance committees throughout Merck Research Laboratories.
  • Prior experience either working with or leading collaborations with external academic, biotechnology, and contract research organizations.  
  • Experience in mentoring and/or leading PhD level and non-PhD level scientists.
