Sr. Specialist, Compensation & Benefits Advisor


As part of the Compensation & Benefits Operations team, you play a key role in the exceptional delivery of Merck’s Total Rewards program to employees and their families.
The Senior Specialist, Compensation & Benefits Advisor is responsible for providing timely consultation to internal stakeholders around our US benefits and compensation programs. You will have ample opportunities to build a network in the HR organization to drive a working understanding of program features, and to provide specific guidance to individuals and groups impacted by business and life events.
This role requires a highly effective collaborator familiar with the fundamentals of US benefits programs and long-term incentive compensation plans, and a lifelong learning style adaptable to legacy plan provisions and newly-developed programs which are evolving to meet the needs of a future workforce.

  • Consult with internal stakeholders including, but not limited to, the Compensation & Benefits CoE, HR Business Partners, Global HR Service Delivery teams, and internal & external Global Talent Acquisition teams
  • Support transitioning executives in their understanding of key compensation & benefits programs at critical moments in their career lifecycle
  • Establish scalable deliverables that improve our ability to deliver information efficiently and consistently based on business needs
  • Contribute to the ongoing education and reinforcement of our programs with all stakeholders, including externalized suppliers who play a role in representing these programs to our active and former employees
  • Represent the Compensation & Benefits Operations function in areas of business restructuring and M&A activities
  • Participate in the ongoing maintenance and development of our Total Rewards statement tools as part of our financial wellness strategy
  • Actively participate in all aspects of systems testing and administrative portal design to better relate to the employee experience throughout our digital transformation journey

Education & Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Advanced degree and/or Benefits/Compensation certification is preferred
  • Minimum of 6 years of work experience in HR, benefits, compensation, finance, consulting, or related fields
  • Strong knowledge of US benefits programs, including qualified and non-qualified DB & DC retirement plans, and retiree medical plans
  • Understanding of long-term incentive programs and separation-related provisions impacting executives
  • Working knowledge of regulatory guidelines (e.g. ERISA, 409A)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and confidently with stakeholder groups at different levels of subject matter engagement
  • Strong executive presence and the ability to anticipate questions and needs through empathetic listening
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in researching solutions and providing participant steerage to available resources
