The External Manufacturing Operations Director (ExMOD) is a role with key areas of responsibility spanning the Drug Product and Device platform within Merck External Manufacturing Operations (ExM). Major deliverables include but are not limited to:

  • Leading one or more CMO (Contract Manufacturing Organization) oversight or “focused factory” teams at times depending on CMO complexity and segmentation level. In this assignment The ExMOD is the owner and primary point of contact for all dealings between the Merck Manufacturing Division (MMD), and the CMO and establishes a strong business partnership as well as boundaries and ground rules of engagement. ExMOD’s will typically manage relationships that are highly complex in nature and of strategic importance. The External Manufacturing Operations Director (ExMOD) is a "Virtual Plant Manager" within ExM. They:
a. oversee MMD’s relationship with the contract manufacturer. The ExMOD manages all information/interactions between MMD and the contract manufacturer and establishes boundaries and ground rules of engagement.
b. Is the leader of the MMD cross functional team (Supply Chain, Quality, Technical Ops, Procurement…) who are responsible for delivering daily/weekly/monthly/annual requirements at their external partner(s).
c. Is accountable for all operational and business related activities at the partner and for the effective interface with Merck internal sites receiving or supplying products.

  • Leader of the S&OP/IBM (Sales and Operations planning or Integrated Business Management) process in the platform, coordinating the financial analysis and supply response portion of the S&OP cycle to SCM (Supply Chain Management) on behalf of our 35+ CMO sites as well as working with Merck’s VCMT (Value Chain Management Teams) to evaluate and respond to the long-term supply scenarios and needs for the platform.
  • Accountable for assisting in developing and overseeing implementation of the platform network strategy as we seek to improve customer service and efficiency and align to a segmentation strategy.
  • Leads setup and evaluation of new CMO’s (Contract Manufacturing Organizations) in the platform as capabilities are required to be added.
  • Responsible to maintain platform objectives, metrics, and lead key business improvement initiatives.
  • Leading large projects such as the packaging serialization initiative spanning multiple sites.
  • Facilitating the annual platform hoshin and monitoring execution of platform strategy installation and realization.

The role will require strong influence, leadership and communication skills to drive business outcomes. The role may require significant time at the manufacturing sites of responsibility to ensure ongoing success, and partners with an organization spanning North America, Western Europe and China.

 


Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Engineering or Science background preferred)
Required Experience and Skills:
  • No less than twelve (12) years’ experience in pharmaceutical manufacturing (operations, quality, technology, supply chain)
  • At least 5 years of experience in direct group management/leadership positions
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal, communication, collaboration, and negotiation skills to work outside boundaries as a norm
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Knowledge in oral solid dosage manufacturing, device, and/or pharmaceutical packaging operations. Has proven skills and expertise at management of operations within the platform.
  • Supply chain excellence knowledge and experience. Ability to apply understanding of end-to-end supply chain within external and internal network and stakeholders across the network to achieve results and contribute supply chain optimization
  • Compliance knowledge – Has experience and ability to achieve compliance goals through a risk-based approach and deep understanding of GMP and EHS compliance and compliance risk.
  • Business & Financial Acumen – Has demonstrated skills to understand and apply economic, financial and industry data to make business decisions that drive value for Merck and our customers.
