The Director of Estimating is a key position in Global Estimating and Control (E&C) whose mandate is to provide effective and innovative cost and schedule solutions to our business partners to maximize their value and for our teams to ensure successful project execution.

The leader will need to bring energy, experience and innovation to carry out the following:

  • Ensure the right people, processes and systems are in place to develop reliable estimates, with appropriate accuracy, in a timely manner to support decision making and effective execution of capital projects 
  • Manage estimates supporting projects in the order of up to $ 4billion in aggregate per year.
  • Continuously improve skillsets, systems and database, knowledge of projects, the market and industry
  • Transform our estimating methodology and lead the organization to focus on developing target costs during FEL-1 (project business case approval) and provide teams tools to manage target costs throughout FEL and execution
  • Bring innovation and industry leading solutions, including methods to leverage technology to improve estimating and project delivery


  • Lead the GES Global Estimating Organization (a team of ~12 professionals, including Merck and contract staffing).
  • Develop, coach and retain a global high-performance organization that promotes development, diversity, delivers customer value and demonstrates Merck leadership behaviors 
  • Direct a staff of engineering and business professionals whose primary function will be to serve as liaisons to our Business Integrators and Capital Project teams 
  • Maintain and continuously improve GES Estimating practices, systems and database
  • Manage the GES Stage Gate Governance Process
  • Support benchmarking (internal & external) of project cost and performance
  • Support implementation of Target Value Delivery (TVD)
  • Support Capital Planning and Project Funding processes
  • Identify and coach estimators in new methodologies and practices adopted from external benchmarking
  • Interface with FEL and EPCM Partners to ensure they understand Merck estimating requirements, continuously improve their processes and implement innovative approaches to estimating


Education Minimum Requirement:  

  • Bachelor’s degree (Engineering discipline and advanced education preferred)

Required Experience and Skills: 

  • 15 + years of Estimating, Project Control, Capital Management and/or Project Management experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interface effectively with all levels in the organization and proven leadership demonstrated over multiple assignments
  • Strong knowledge of estimating, capital management and financial processes
  • Demonstrated leadership skills necessary to transform and sustain a high performing group of technical professionals
  • Broad knowledge of the biopharmaceutical industry across multiple project types (drug substance, drug product, lab, large molecule, small molecule, etc.) and all lines of business (R&D, Human Health, Animal Health)
  • Ability to travel across Merck sites up to 25% of their time

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in Lean Project Delivery Methodologies (e.g. Target Value Delivery and Last Planner®, Takt planning)
  • Knowledge of Merck’s Capital Management processes
  • Knowledge of Estimating and Information Management systems
  • Strategic planning or portfolio management experience
  • Lean/Six Sigma experience, change management expertise
  • Knowledge of AE, CM and Professional Service providers estimating means and methods
