The Sr. Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist will ensure Chemical Monitoring and Lab Safety Programs are following Merck Corporate procedures and all applicable local and regional regulations. This individual will lead initiatives to manage the site’s Industrial Hygiene Chemical Monitoring Program and standardize practices in Merck Research Laboratories. They will partner with operations to develop objectives to achieve these goals in alignment with site business goals and values. 

Specific objectives will include:
  • Site program leader for Industrial Hygiene - Chemical Monitoring and Lab Safety Programs. 
    • Develop, execute, and oversee the site chemical monitoring plan.
    • Utilize a variety of industrial hygiene monitoring, sampling and analytical equipment to evaluate chemical exposures; maintains detailed records of sampling activities. 
    • Prepare chemical monitoring reports and submit recommendations to reduce chemical monitoring risks.
    • Conduct routine and follow-up department industrial hygiene surveys.
    • Develop, execute, and oversee Respiratory Protection and Indoor Air Quality program to meet all regulatory and corporate Industrial Hygiene program compliance.
    • Interpret regulations, guidelines, resources and reference information on industrial hygiene program elements, and advises site personnel on related issues and recommends safe practices.
    • Advise employees on occupational health programs related to chemical hazards.
    • Partner with departments to proactively address chemical exposure hazards.
  • Lead the development and management of the Lab EHS strategy: 
    • Develop Merck Research Laboratories strategy, focused on EHS compliance and proactive initiatives prevent EHS incidents.
    • Support the Merck Research Laboratories committees and partner with Merck Research Laboratories leadership to drive main initiatives. 
    • Monitor and support the site and MRL EHS initiatives and communicate status to leadership.
    • Oversee the Merck Research Laboratories communications program to internal leadership and employees. 

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:
  • BS/BA in safety, industrial hygiene environmental, ergonomics or a science / engineering field
Required Experience and Skills:
  • 5 + years applied professional EHS work experience. 
  • Demonstrate strong project management techniques. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in developing and managing EHS program, training and systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with site leaders.
  • Ability to develop and implement department goals and strategies. 
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Relevant professional certification(s) preferred including Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Relevant professional experience supporting pharmaceutical industry and/or research labs.
  • Experience implementing lean principles and process improvement in an operational environment.
  • Master’s in management, safety, IH, ergonomics or a science / engineering field.
