As the primary US packaging site for Merck's Global Pharmaceutical Operations organization, the Wilson team is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Senior Packaging/Component Engineer. The Senior Packaging/Component Engineer will provide leadership and technical oversight to the Wilson Engineering Services team. This team will be responsible for providing packaging and component engineering capabilities to the site focused on effective component life cycle management and packaging continuous improvement. This position will report to the Associate Director, Wilson Engineering Services and will have frequent interaction with other business units at the site as well as external suppliers, packaging commercialization, and global support functions.

General Profile:

  • Working member of a small packaging / component engineering team (3-4 professional staff)
  • Makes sound recommendations to support component consistency, cost effectiveness, and reliability
  • Provides leadership and technical guidance related to packaging components to team members and colleagues
  • Recognizes opportunities for continuous improvement, anticipates customer needs, identifies and implements solutions
  • Possesses strong problem solving skills and business systems knowledge; collaborates with peers to resolve problems that cross into inter-related units and uses lean manufacturing principles to implement sustainable solutions

Functional Expertise / Team Responsibilities: 

  • Troubleshoot line issues potentially related to component performance
  • Assist with design transfer process from packaging commercialization team
  • Support quality risk management assessments related to packaging operations and components
  • Participate in Design Requirements Specifications, Design Reviews, Review of Purchase Specs and Functional Spec.
  • Work with component vendors to develop new/test components and initiate distribution studies
  • Partner with Procurement and Supplier Management teams for supplier performance monitoring, technical assessments, and new vendor introduction
  • Provide technical SME support for deviations and customer complaints
  • Troubleshoot line issues potentially related to component performance
  • Develops packaging bills of materials (BOMs) to support production requirements
  • Coordinates artwork changes across multiple departments to assure regulatory timelines for implementation are met and that product supply is not interrupted
  • Directly supports regulatory inspections and audits
  • Leads the team and others by providing direction and principle-based guidance
  • Ensures team compliance to corporate, site, and departmental procedures designed to ensure cGMP and EHS compliance
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Take on project management opportunities by leading and participating in process improvement and key business initiatives
  • Creates a culture of inclusiveness and consistency, ensuring consistent application of site policies and performance expectations


Education Minimum Requirement:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree  in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering degree with relevant packaging experience. A Master's Degree is preferred.
Required Experience and Skills: 
  • Minimum of Five (5) years of packaging component experience supporting high volume GMP packaging operations
  • Thorough working knowledge of cGMP and regulatory requirements as they apply to pharmaceutical packaging and distribution
  • Highly motivated and possessed excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and technical skills.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Experience with formal problem solving techniques such as root cause analysis and/or Lean Six Sigma
  • Project management skills and experience implementing projects
  • Technical writing and document review experience (deviations, change requests, standard operating procedures, protocols, etc.)
