The Merck Early Discovery Neuroscience team is seeking a self-motivated and technically skilled student majoring in the fields of Computational Neuroscience, Neuroimaging, Statistics or Bioinformatics. Successful candidates will be working on discovery projects independently, as well as proactively collaborate within and across interdisciplinary teams. Primary responsibilities include working with research neuroscientists on (i) validation and application of custom-build, quantitative image analysis algorithms for 3D confocal laser scanning microscopy in CNS neurodegeneration model (ii) statistical data analysis, and (ii) optimize data visualization and graphical presentations to distill complex biological concepts for clear communication, conceptualization and scientific dialogues. These core objectives will lead to novel methods and insights into disease pathophysiology and further support the validation of novel targets for neurodegenerative diseases. The candidate will therefore be an active participant in the positive and critical scientific discussions, troubleshooting and experimental design of target validation studies that support our therapeutic mission focused on modulating disease progression for neurodegenerative disorders. The student should have strong interest in neuroscience and learning about CNS drug discovery.

The responsibilities of the Early Discovery Neuroscience team member include:

  • Development, iteration and validation of custom-build image analysis tools using Fiji/ImageJ
  • Confocal image acquisition and semi-automated image analysis
  • Data consolidation, statistical analysis and visualization, e.g. R, Spotfire, html or JavaScript
  • Support graphical design and innovative solutions for communicating complex biological concepts – merging insights from molecular and cellular mechanisms with disease pathophysiology.
  • Assist in developing, executing, and troubleshooting immunohistochemical protocols and imaging methods for fixed tissue samples
  • Accurate record keeping and communication of data clearly and concisely to teams and stakeholders.
  • Monitor, review and critically interpret published work to guide their own research.
  • Collaborate with colleagues from other functional areas and across different sites.
This is a full-time co-op position. Housing subsidy is not provided for this position and, if required, must be funded 100% by the student.

  • Required: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a minimum of a BS/BA degree program in computational or neurosciences or related disciplines such as statistics, imaging or biotechnology related fields
Required Experience and Skills:
  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (6) months beginning in mid 2019
  • Candidates must have basic skills in bench work and lab procedures: pipetting, solution preparation.
  • Candidates must have basic programming skills.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated ability to perform data analysis of large image data sets accurately, critically, and in an organized manner. 
  • Candidates must have excellent written an oral communication skills, including preparation of lab reports, data summaries, and presentations. 
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Candidates should have a background in neuroscience
  • Candidates should have experience with tissue processing, histology, 3D confocal microscopy and Imaging software including ImageJ
  • Candidates should possess a high level of motivation in generating and testing analytical and graphical tools to support model characterization and target validation for early stage projects
