Position Overview:

The successful postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for the leading a collaborative effort between Merck and Prof. Masayuki Wasa (Boston College) in the area of frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) catalysis. In this role, the incumbent will specifically focus on methodology development and reaction optimization. The candidate will collaborate across disciplines within MRL and improve existing workflows in chemocatalysis. The incumbent will make contributions to Merck’s external reputation through peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. The successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal and cross-functional collaboration and communication skills.
  
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Leading the invention and optimization of new methods and catalysts, specifically in the field of FLP catalysis
  • Collaborating closely with colleagues across Discovery, Process, and Discovery Process Chemistry, and working effectively with other functional areas such as modeling and informatics
  • Using state-of-the-art chemistry techniques and equipment to problem solve and quickly drive innovations in FLP-based methodology
  • Presenting ideas and results, including identifying issues and brainstorming possible solutions, at project team and departmental meetings
  • Executing high-throughput experimentation, where relevant, to impact the field of catalysis
  • Developing chemistries to facilitate the synthesis of small molecule libraries using the aforementioned FLP catalysts and associated methods
Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:  
  • PhD with less than 3 years of Postdoctoral Experience or achieved a PhD by Spring/Summer of  2018 
Required Experience and Skills: 
  • Experience of all techniques associated with modern synthetic organic chemistry, including the synthesis, purification, and characterization of chemical compounds on small and medium scale
  • Strong leadership, student mentorship, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Proven ability to independently design experiments, interpret data, and incorporate data into new experimental designs leading to successful experimental outcomes
  • Independent, science-based, and innovative thinking, and the ability to mine scientific literature and databases where appropriate
  • Functions well within multidisciplinary teams, and possesses outstanding oral and written communication skills
Preferred Experience and Skills: 
  • Experience in the field of catalysis and reaction optimization, possibly in enantioselective catalysis or FLP chemistry
  • Strong history of publication in peer-reviewed journals
  • Demonstrated aptitude for learning & adopting new software, tools, and technologies
  • Anticipates the need for contingencies where relevant, and plans alternative strategies as a means for risk management
