Director, Business Development & Licensing – Oncology and Immuno-Oncology Search and Evaluation

Key contributor to Merck’s business development efforts in search and evaluation, due diligence, and execution of preclinical through clinical stage to regulatory approval business development opportunities in oncology and immuno-oncology.

Identify, evaluate, and execute oncology and immuno-oncology business development opportunities with a focus on cutting-edge science across different modalities to enhance and/or expand Merck’s pipeline.

Contribute to oncology and immuno-oncology business development strategy with preclinical and clinical development leadership.

Responsible for leading deep scientific and clinical due diligence, the quality of formal due diligence output, and the integration of internal subject matter expert input and senior management review and approval.

Work closely with search and evaluation colleagues in Merck’s business development External Innovation Hubs to ensure comprehensive coverage of the relevant opportunity space.

Work closely with transaction leads, legal, commercial and financial analysis team to ensure relevant deals of highest priority are being advanced and executed.

Collaborate with preclinical, clinical, and commercial team, as well as commercial business development colleagues to ensure alignment between activities and business development needs relating to the pipeline.

Analyze the full range of data and lead cross-functional due diligence on inbound and outbound licensing and business development opportunities (from discovery through filing).

Provide thorough and timely assessments and updates to appropriate management levels to ensure efficient communication and seamless cross functional collaboration. 

Manage a portfolio of complex business development projects serving as the primary scientific contact for potential licensing, acquisition, collaborations, co-development agreements, and strategic alliances in oncology and immuno-oncology.

MD or PhD in biological/medical disciplines or PharmD with 3 plus years postdoctoral or clinical training experience.


At least 5 years relevant experience in the biopharma industry with comprehensive understanding of drug discovery and development and a broad knowledge of the biopharma and healthcare sector.

At least 3 years relevant experience working in and a deep knowledge of the oncology and immuno-oncology therapeutic area.

At least 3 years of relevant experience in business development or related experience and an established network in the biopharmaceutical industry.

Demonstrated success in identifying, evaluating, and executing significant business development deals and partnerships that have resulted in substantial impact.

Thorough understanding of industry trends and competitive landscape with strong business acumen and ability to translate scientific and technical information to frame attractive business opportunities.

Strong interpersonal, analytical, critical-thinking, verbal and written communication skills.

Highly developed organizational skills, operational skills, and ability to understand the content of and memorialize interactions potential partners. 

Strong leadership skills and proven ability to influence others to reach common goals as well as act independently.

Must possess the executive presence to facilitate the decision-making process among Merck Senior Executives. 

Self-motivated, attention to detail, and proven ability to work well on teams.
