We are seeking a motivated scientist to join the Downstream Process Development and Engineering group within Biologics PR&D in Kenilworth, NJ to support process development for diverse therapeutic protein candidates in the Merck Research Labs pipeline.  The individual will be responsible for the development of clinical and manufacturing processes for new protein candidates, focusing on both early and late stage programs with work spanning from initial process development for First in Human trials to process characterization for commercial manufacturing.   In addition, the scientist will be responsible for supporting their development work with in-process analytics.  They should have a strong background in biochemical engineering fundamentals or protein biochemistry and a focus on downstream unit operations such as chromatography or filtration would be beneficial.  Additionally, the position will require close collaboration with different functional areas of BioProcess (cell line development, upstream, analytical, formulation), the manufacturing commercialization group, and external Contract manufacturers.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:  BS in Biological Sciences/Chemical Engineering/Biological Engineering/Biochemistry with min of 3 years experience or MS

Required Experience and Skills: 
o Experience in downstream process development (such as chromatography and filtration processes) for protein therapeutics
o Strong understanding of protein biochemistry and its relation to purification process development. 
o Excellent oral and written communication skills
o Demonstrated ability for independent execution of experiments
o Demonstrated ability to collaborate within teams (cross-functional and/or remote teams). 
Preferred Experience and Skills:
o Experience with statistical design of experiment and data analysis using JUMP or other software
o Experience with high throughput process development
o Knowledge of analytical HPLC/UPLC separations, and experience of operating, maintaining, trouble-shooting HPLC/UPLC systems.
