The Merck, Process Research and Development organization is responsible for the development of upstream and downstream processes supporting both development and commercial process development and transfer for biologics pipeline. Due to the breadth of responsibilities for Biologics PR&D collaboration across divisions including discovery, commercialization, and external partners is required.  The  Next-Gen Platform Development group within PR&D in Kenilworth, NJ is seeking a motivated and experienced upstream scientist to join our team to support internal technology initiatives for both our current diverse pipeline and next-generation bioprocessing initiatives within Merck Research Labs.   As a Senior Scientist in Merck Research Labs Process Research & Development in Kenilworth, NJ, you will work with a highly collaborative team of scientists and engineers to design and develop upstream cell culture processes in support of early- to late-stage manufacturing processes for biological products (therapeutic proteins).   The scope and activities include designing and optimizing cell culture/fermentation media and process parameters to enhance growth, product yield and quality for perfusion-based processes.  Experience with bioreactor/WAVE/Ambr systems is desirable. Careful documentation of results in an Electronic Lab Notebook and strong communication skills both verbal and presentation of data is required.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Independently design and conduct perfusion cell culture experiments and analysis using a variety of analytical instrument and techniques
• Serve as Subject Matter Expert on novel processes such as perfusion and continuous manufacturing.
• Collaborate with downstream, process analytics, and other functional teams in both R&D and manufacturing to advance biologics pipeline. 
• Conduct laboratory-scale and/or pilot-scale studies to support scale-up and tech transfer of processes.
• Systematically and scientifically characterize different cell cultures (clones) to improve process development and understanding  
• Contribute to a safe and compliant laboratory work environment.   


Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement: 
MS with 3 years of experience or a new PhD in biological sciences, microbiology, chemical engineering or related field

Required Experience and Skills: 
• Scientific understanding of cell biology and engineering principles for recombinant protein production with mammalian cell culture.
• Experience with cell culture aseptic technique, assays and general laboratory practices 
• Proven ability to design and execute cell culture experiment independently from protein expression to different cell culture scales including shaker flasks and/or bioreactor
• Experience with statistical data analysis tools such as design of experiment and multivariate data analysis 
• Strong passion and commitment to integrate science to biologic process development 


Preferred Experience and Skills:
• Experience with high throughput cell culture technique and automation
• Experience with perfusion cell culture and cell retention devices such as ATF, TFF, acoustic wave etc.
• Experience with bioreactor and/or process control systems such as MFCS and DeltaV 
• Experience with bioanalytical techniques such as flow cytometry, microscopy, biochemical assays and cell functional assays is also desirable
