The Associate Director,  Business Strategy, part of the Market Intelligence and Business Strategy (MIBS) team, will play a pivotal role in further developing the global Strategy function within Merck Animal Health.   By leading strategy assessment and planning activities for the global enterprise, and providing leadership and oversight for strategic initiatives, the AD will help drive decision-making that creates medium and long-term value for the organization.  As such, this individual will interact with and present frequently to the Animal Health LeadershipTeam, including the President, Chief Marketing Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Regional Vice Presidents and other senior leaders in Commerical, R&D, Manufacturing and Supply, Finance, HR and IT.  

Key responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

Lead enterprise strategy assessment activities to define and refine the organization’s business strategies.  

Identify, plan and implement strategic projects and engagements within the company’s core business as well as adjacent domains in order to drive growth for the enterprise;  Develop business cases to support these initiatives

Lead the integration and alignment of strategy processes into business and financial planning workflows 

Monitor key external trends and uncover new areas of strategic exploration and opportunity assessment given market and competitive dynamics

Perform rigorous analysis of market opportunities and prioritize through hypothesis-based problem solving

Translate analysis output into practical and implementable recommendations

Support business development/M&A actions

Support ongoing competitive intelligence 

Drive a culture of strategic thinking by building and adapting strategy processes to set best-practices for the organization


Education Minimum Requirement: 

Required: BA/BS

Preferred: MA/MS/MBA

Required Experience and Skills**: 

Minimum of 7 years working experience with at least 3 years managing projects in a Corporate Strategy department, Consulting firm or Investment Bank.

•      Experience working in the Animal Health or Life Sciences industry.

Experience leading strategic assessment or development projects that have included engaging members of a senior leadership team and moderating high-level discussions and workshops

Conceptual knowledge of core business disciplines such as Strategy, Finance, Accounting, Marketing, and Operations

Demonstrated data and /or financial modeling skills;  Ability to analyze a company’s P&L and perform financial analyses

Analytical thinker, able to distill insights from large amounts of data and analysis

Ability to influence others and move toward a common vision or goal

Understanding of business trends and factors that impact life sciences or animal health business in order to define and translate strategy into execution

Ability to work effectively on multiple projects with demanding deadlines in a team environment

Preferred Experience and Skills:

Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint;  Working knowledge of at least one statistical package(i.e. SPSS, SAS, R)  a bonus

Previous experience in Healthcare industry and/or related functions (Strategy/Finance) is preferred

Attention to detail and persuasive written and visual communication skills are critical

Completion of other relevant training/education/accreditations is preferred
