The Sensory and Muscle Pharmacology therapeutic area within Discovery Research at Merck is seeking to recruit a Research Associate Scientist that is highly motivated to applying their skills towards the identification and development of novel targets to treat a broad array of sensory and musculoskeletal diseases. The location will be the preclinical research laboratories at our new state of the art facility in the South San Francisco Bay Area. Beyond local connections, you will also be able to supplement your research activities by taking advantage of the technologies and capabilities of the wider Merck network of sites in Boston, MA as well as NJ and PA.

Responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:

  • The individual will be expected to assist in the design, plan, and execution of in vitro laboratory experiments and provide scientific and technical input into the Sensory and Muscle Pharmacology and Cardiometabolic Disease portfolio.
  • Expected to balance work on multiple projects in support of our drug discovery and development goals at various stages of the preclinical research phase from target validation through to lead optimization.
  • Highly self-motivated, possess strong technical skills, have strong written and oral communication skills, and be able to work productively in a collaborative and cross functional team environment within and outside of the Merck Research Laboratories.
  • Relevant areas of training may include one or more of the following disease areas: sensory disorders (e.g. related to pain or itch), muscle atrophy, cardiovascular disease or diabetes.






  • Required: BS/BA in Biology, Pharmacology, Physiology, Pathology, Biochemistry or related field

Required Experience:

  • Basic cell culture technique
  • Optimization of in vitro assays in live or lysed cells (e.g., calcium fluorescence or second messenger assays)
  • Understanding of basic graphing techniques and biostatistics


Preferred Experience:

  • Development and optimization of enzyme assays
  • Microscopy and other imaging techniques (e.g. high content analysis), including cell fixation and staining
  • Use and calibration of laboratory liquid handling instruments and plate readers
  • Lab automation including use of robotic arms and scheduling software
  • FACS and Flow Cytometry
  • Quantification of protein from cell lysates (e.g. Westerns)
  • Molecular biology techniques (e.g. PCR, cloning, preparation of genetic constructs)
