The Executive Director of Health Economics leads a team of health economists and outcomes researchers to develop health economic models and conduct economic analyses to enable the company to understand and communicate the full economic value of Merck products and optimize market access and patient outcomes.

The ideal candidate should have extensive experience in health economic modeling and analyses, in depth knowledge of health economics and outcomes research methods and full understanding of the evolving health care and payer environment in US and ex-US markets, health technology assessment needs, and the demands of external payer customers. The Executive Director should have strong strategic thinking, leadership, communication and people management skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team in the Economic and Data Sciences (EDS) department of the Merck Center for Observational and Real-world Evidence (CORE) to develop and implement health economic models and analyses to demonstrate the value of Merck pharmaceuticals including primary care, women’s health, hospital and specialty care products;
  • Lead, manage, mentor and provide strategic direction to a team of 4-8 health economists and outcomes researchers;
  • Accountable for the prioritization and development of high quality health economic models and tools to support market access, pricing, reimbursement, HTA, formulary listing and promotion of Merck pharmaceuticals in US and ex-US markets;
  • Collaborate with key Merck/MSD markets to adapt global health economic models to local markets for HTA, reimbursement and formulary submissions;
  • Contribute to the development and commercialization strategies of developmental products by providing early health economic insights;
  • Build effective working relationships with CORE product line leads and product development team value evidence subteam leads to ensure that health economic modeling and analytic strategy and plan fully reflect payer/HTA requirements; develop a deep understanding of value evidence needs and ensure delivery of health economic models and tools that are responsive and strongly supportive of the value evidence strategy;
  • Develop effective relationships with external thought leaders in health economics, decision sciences and health policy so as to maintain an extensive understanding of external environment, create opportunities for engagement, and to establish Merck as a leader in the field.
Qualifications

Education:

  • PhD, MD or PharmD and 7+ years of experience in health economics, outcomes research or related discipline with a preference for Ph.D.; or
  • Masters’ degree and 10+ years of experience in health economics, outcomes research or related discipline

Required:

  • Experienced leader with demonstrated ability to build effective teams and develop talent; Able to motivate and channel energy of others toward a clear purpose;
  • Extensive track record and experience in health economic modeling and analysis;
  • Viewed as a subject matter expert related to the application of advanced health economic analyses and models within the pharmaceutical discovery and development process
  • Provides expertise, subject matter input to incorporate analysis into broader business strategies.
  • Ability to develop and communicate model –based health economic insight across broad areas of application (e.g., clinical, payer and policy decision-makers) and further model-development on the basis of interactions with such audiences
  • Demonstrates evidence of strategic thinking and is able to effectively communicate the impact of proposed plans and actions;

Preferred:

  • Demonstrates expertise in identifying leading edge research methodologies, technologies and standards for research activity execution
  • Ability to seamlessly interact on both business and scientific issues
  • Extensive track record interfacing with R&D and commercial organizations in pharmaceutical industry;
  • Demonstrated depth of understanding of health economic modeling methods, HTA and health care policy trends, and ability to leverage health economics expertise to meet evolving business needs;
  • Evidence of technical expertise of applying health economic evidence and insights at the therapy/product level;
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with external customers and experts;
  • Well-developed business acumen;
  • Demonstrated customer focus;
  • Strong decision-making skills;
  • Excellent matrix, interpersonal and influencing skills;
  • Financial management experience;
  • Experience in leading and managing change, including a track record of flexible, out-of-the-box thinking and responding effectively to rapidly changing requirements;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Enlists others to align objectives with those of the organization;
  • Strong desire to reach challenging goals and continuously improve;
  • Works tenaciously through difficulties to achieve best results.
  • Experience and knowledge of 3 or more therapeutic areas including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, HIV, women’s health, infectious diseases, neurosciences and general medicine.
