The position of Associate Director of Sustainable Sourcing is responsible for all sustainable sourcing activities in support of Merck’s sustainability goals.  As a member of the Global Supplier Management Group (GSMG) the Associate Director is responsible for identifying, building, and managing effective relationships with internal colleagues and external suppliers to develop sustainable sourcing solutions that make an impact on reducing Merck’s carbon footprint across the supply chain.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy, Standards, and Policy: 
  •  Work with GSMG leadership team, Procurement Category Leaders, and EHS Sustainability Department to establish Merck’s sustainability strategy in line with overall business strategy.
  •  Work closely with category sourcing leads and other business leaders to embed the sustainable sourcing vision and ensure appropriate buying decisions are made with consideration of the Supplier Code of Conduct and other responsible sourcing standards.  Oversee, adapt, and evolve the company’s current Supplier Code of Conduct and Social Accountability Program in line with achieving waste, water and energy reduction targets. 
  •  Participate in cross-functional steering committees in order to make recommendations for the development of sustainability procedures, policies and best practice improvements. 
Capability Building:
  •  Build capacity and knowledge across Merck’s sourcing functions around sustainable sourcing and Merck’s vision for sustainable sourcing and best practices.  Partner with internal and external stakeholders to create awareness of sustainability initiatives.
  • Lead supplier engagement to educate supply chain partners about Merck’s sustainable sourcing priorities and develop and expand best practices. 
  •  Represent the Merck sustainable sourcing team during supplier meetings and audits. 
  •  Work with Learning & Development to build commercial capability by supporting the creation and delivery of sustainable training to include support on presentations, organizing of events, co-ordination of meetings, etc.
Monitoring:
  •  Identifying key trends and initiatives that will reduce supply chain environmental impact and enhance Merck’s reputation as a sustainable organization through its sustainable sourcing practices and policies. 
  •  Building off of historical program participation and audit data, develop and maintain key metrics for success for the program incorporating relevant environmental and social data.  Build capabilities with our sourcing leads and supply base to monitor performance, and measure impact and improvement. 
  •  Develop and implement tools to manage risk around for the supply base.
  • Monitor industry standards for best-in-class sustainable sourcing strategies, identify emerging product categories or materials facing issues, and keep up to date on industry and regulatory issues. 
  •  Monitor supplier performance to ensure acceptable standards and continuous improvement are being achieved.  Support category sourcing leads to review supplier audits and monitor corrective action plan implementation. 
  • Perform site visits to key suppliers globally (as required).
Innovation and Practices:
  •  Be a recognized thought leader and primary point of contact on sustainable sourcing both within and outside the company.
  •  Monitor external environment for new practices and evaluate for continuous improvement in Merck programs.  Includes working with educational and industry organizations.
  •  Attend community events and other applicable sustainability focused events.
  •  Coach and mentor suppliers and assist in exploring future opportunities to enhance social and other sustainable sourcing programs with our suppliers.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Business, Engineering, Environment and Sustainability related degrees.
Required Experience and Skills: 
  •  5 years of sourcing and supply chain experience. 
  •  Current knowledge of leading sustainable sourcing practices and issues, as well as experience implementing innovative solutions.  
  •  Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment and possess the desire and curiosity to understand emerging trends 
  •  Global perspective and international experience.
