As part of the Corporate Transactions team, most of the transactions we support are multidisciplinary and involve complex legal issues. For example, if I’m working on a strategic collaboration, I will routinely consult with colleagues in our regulatory, intellectual property and commercial practice groups. In addition, working at the company provides me with the opportunity to work on highly sophisticated, cutting-edge deals that have the ability to make a substantial impact on patients’ lives.

Many years ago when I first started with the company, I asked a doctor I worked with why he left private practice for a pharmaceutical company. The doctor stated that as a doctor he was bound to follow standard of care guidelines in his treatment of patients. However, by working at a pharmaceutical company, he could play a role in evolving the standard of care to better help patients. This spirit of innovation and desire to help people has always inspired me along with seeing the products we have developed make this desire a reality.

I appreciate being part of the team that negotiates and executes meaningful scientific and business opportunities for the company as well as for our patients. The job often presents opportunities for me to wear a non-attorney hat, and I enjoy working closely with my colleagues from different organizations within the company who are all driven to bring better outcomes for our patients. My job continues to provide me with growth opportunities as a transactional attorney and also pushes me to learn things beyond my comfort zone (whether legal or science)!

Although we, in legal, may not work first hand with the research and development of medications, we have the unique and important responsibility of making sure that our scientists have the tools, materials and collaborative opportunities they need to develop medicines, making our world a healthier and safer place to live.
