Voices of career progress

Paul’s energy, attitude, and dedication as an intern showed his team and mentors just how valuable he could be to the organization. Looking to continue success and career growth, Paul and his former manager Laura share how the Year Up internship experience helped shape their futures with Merck.

Paul Funches

Associate Specialist, Regulatory Affairs
"To do my job effectively, I had to learn how to adapt and pick up new skills. I learned a lot of technical skills while working with Laura, but it was the soft skills that I developed that were the most beneficial."

Laura Shelley RPh, PMP, PSM

Executive Director Regulatory Affairs, Regulatory Compliance & Partner Operations
"Working with Paul reinforced to our team that while certain skills might come with a college diploma, they are not always the most important to be successful in a role. Paul demonstrated that desire to achieve, time management, and solid interpersonal skills can all enable success."
