Internship update
Our goals are to offer a safe and enriching experience to you and to every member of this community.
To achieve those goals this summer, it has been decided that unless otherwise communicated, interns and co-ops will work remotely.
We need your help to make sure this process runs smoothly.
Please read and take the following actions:
Domestic living arrangements: in order to complete your internship or co-op remotely you must work from a location in the U.S. Please contact your recruiter if this is a concern.
Equipment shipping: laptops & computing equipment will be shipped to you for arrival on your first day of work.
Login to Workday ASAP and review your mailing address; make sure it reflects your address as it will be on your first day of work.
We expect there will be a few exceptions to this rule. Those exceptions will be communicated directly by managers as soon as possible.
Parking will vary from site to site. Please check in with your local point of contact at the site for parking instructions.
Onboarding
Onboarding typically begins about 60 days before your start date. At this time, you will recieve an e-mail from our New Empoyee Administration (NEA) with instructions and an overview of the pre-employment contingency check process. The timing may vary slightly due to the heavy volume of interns being onboarded over the summer. Please be sure to check your e-mail (including your junk folder) regularly during this time.
At Merck, we utilize Global Background Check program to conduct background screenings on newly hired and rehired employees. This program helps us make informed, quality hiring decisions to support our business needs while adhering to local laws and regulations.
The contingency check comprises of a background screen (education information and employment background) and drug screen. This process can take up to 2-3 weeks to complete. Note that you will need to be in the U.S. to complete the drug screen.
You will be notified once you successfully complete all required pre-employment contingencies. If you have questions about this process, please reach out directly to your NEA representative.
First day logistics
Once all contingencies have been cleared, you will recieve a "First Day Letter" electronically from NEA which will include where to report on your first day. Your manager will be sure to update you if there is any additional information regarding first day logistics that you need to know. Allow yourself some extra time for arrival in case of unexpected delays. It is also helpful to have your manager's name and phone number in case of emergencies.
This will vary depending on what department you are working with. If you are unsure of the attire for your department, please feel free to reach out to your manager contact.
You will recieve a separate email prior to your first day from ‘DoNotReply@www.perfectcompliance.com’ requesting that you complete Section 1 of the Form 1-9 electronically. Please make sure to check your spam folder to ensure receipt. Please review the instructions and the list of acceptable documents. *You must bring the required original document(s) for verification purposes on your first day.
It's also helpful to be prepared with a pen and notebook on Day 1. You will be receving a laptop within your first week.
Intern events & networking
Yes! Throughout the summer, there are several events for you to attend. Some of the events are organized at an enterprise level (all interns/co-ops) by University Relations, some are specific by site, and some may be organized by your department. Overall, there are plenty of opportunities to network with your fellow peers and learn about Merck!
Yes! We have an invite only LinkedIn group called the Future Talent Program group. A link to the group can be found here.
Yes! Our Next Gen Network coordinates an enterprise wide mentor program. This program is voluntary, and you will be hearing more about it a little closer to the summer.
